Pros and Cons of Teeth Whitening

Orthodontics in Virginia Beach, VASometimes you look at models in ads and wonder how they manage to keep their teeth so white. We all brush our teeth with a fluoride paste every morning and after every meal – just as the doctor prescribes. But why are your teeth not as white?

Well, most of these models undergo what is known as teeth whitening. In addition to brushing (like you do), they also visit the dentist to have their teeth whitened using special agents.

Currently there are two options for teeth whitening; at-home whitening prescribed by the dentist and light-activated whitening also popular as power or chair-side whitening that is exclusively performed by the dentist or a dental professional.

The active ingredient in most whitening agents is hydrogen peroxide though some at-home agents contain Carbamide peroxide. Carbamide peroxide may prove less effective as it takes a more time to extract hydrogen peroxide from it. So, basically it stays in your mouth longer in order to work. According to the American Dental Association, at-home whitening kits contain between 3 – 10 percent hydrogen peroxide.

Either option can be very effective. However, as you’d guess, having a professional dentist whiten your teeth can help minimize risks and side effects.

Before you book an appointment with the dentist, take some time to find out whether or not you qualify for whitening. For example, you may not quality for whitening if you have veneers or crowns. People with sensitive teeth and gums may also not qualify. If you have brown or graying teeth, you may also want to reconsider whitening as such teeth don’t really bleach well.

Pros and cons of whitening

Pros

•    Helps improve smile and general appearance

Having your teeth whitened greatly improves appearance allowing you to smile with confidence even in crowds. Whitening removes any stains on the teeth leaving the teeth with an even color. Light activated whitening has been proved to be successful in removal of stubborn stains. It whitens teeth that have been stained by tetracycline or those with deep rooted brown or graying hues.

•    Boost self esteem

If you have stained teeth, you must have realized how difficult it is to communicate with colleagues. Normally, you don’t even want to open your mouth and when you do so, you’re likely to it cautiously because you don’t want the other person to see your teeth. Teeth-whitening immediately restores your self-esteem allowing you to engage confidently.

•    Teeth whitening leaves you looking younger

Teeth discoloration is sometimes associated with age. You look around and most of the people with discolored teeth are in their sixties and seventies. This is understandable as you’d expect teeth to collect the stains over time. With whiter teeth, you’ll look younger.

Cons

•    Sore gums

Tooth whitening involves the use of chemicals and bleaching agents that can leave your mouth tasting bad. Some patients have even reported canker sores after a whitening procedure.

•    You may be advised to avoid certain foods to keep the teeth white

In order to keep the newfound whiteness for an extended period of time, your dentist might advise against certain foods especially those rich in sugar. Soy sauce, coffee, and red wine are other foods that you may be advised against.

•    You’ll need regular maintenance

Apart from regular brushing and flossing, whitened teeth need return visits to the dentist if the teeth are to remain white for longer.

If you think teeth whitening would help, there is nothing to worry about. Simply visit your dentist and discuss it.
