What to Expect at Your First Visit

Orthodontics in Virginia Beach, VAWhen you visit a new orthodontist, it can be daunting stepping in the front door. What can you expect? How will you be treated? Will it be a welcoming environment? What services will you have access to? What will the costs be? Here at Drs. Savage, Sabol and Visser, we aim to put you at ease from the moment you come see us. We welcome many referrals to our office from family members, friends and co-workers, so rest assured you will be welcomed with open arms.

Bringing your children in for the first time? You may have many questions about the need for orthodontic treatment, and even whether your child is at the right age for such treatment. We stand by the American Association of Orthodontists’ recommendation that kids be evaluated starting at the age of seven or earlier, if your dentist has deemed there may be a concern. This way, we can evaluate your child’s dental needs that may require early treatment or preventive measures.

Initial Exam

First, we will schedule an initial examination where a determination will be made about the need for orthodontic treatments after a comprehensive oral exam. We will go over treatment options, treatment timelines, and estimated costs for any recommended treatment. You will not be charged for this initial visit.

If it is decided your child needs treatment, we will take diagnostic records such as x-rays, oral photographs and impressions for upper and lower study models. This will allow us to better customize an orthodontic plan for your child. Often the initial exam and all diagnostic records will take place within the same visit for your convenience.

Consultation

Once we have all the information we need from the prior visit, we can present you with a better idea of cost, timeline and proposed treatment – a determination made by all three doctors. We will explain all of your options to you so you can better understand the initial orthodontic problem as well as goals for treatment. All financial arrangements will be finalized at this visit and a schedule of appointments in the future will be set up. We will also outline what your insurance will cover and what you will be responsible for.

Going forward, you can expect a visit where the appliances will be fitted, or any prep work that may need to be done first, such as the installation of spacers. Again, our staff will speak extensively to you about all phases so you know exactly what to expect. The first step is to call Drs. Savage, Sabol and Visser at one of our five office locations. We would be happy to schedule an appointment that is convenient for you!
