First Days with Braces

During the first days with braces, there is some adjustment in getting used to them. Drs. Savage, Sabol & Visser understand that their patients in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Virginia’s eastern shore may have questions about what to expect initially and even after each adjustment.

Will My Teeth Hurt After My First Days with Braces?

Braces are designed to gradually shift your teeth into proper alignment. Because of this, there is some discomfort during the first few days; however, it resolves itself very quickly. The discomfort may also occur after each adjustment. While it is minimal, we recommend our patients take an over-the-counter pain reliever until the discomfort subsides.

What if a Wire or Bracket Comes Loose?

It is common for something to happen during the first few days of braces. It is important to be careful with your braces by watching what you eat and drink, as well as what you put in your mouth. These issues can cause the adhesive to chip away or a wire to pull away from the brackets. Should you experience an issue with your appliance, you may call one of our offices to schedule a time to come in so we can fix your braces. If this occurs during off-hours, we provide emergency information to deal with your braces until you can get into the office.

How Do I Keep My Braces Clean?

Good oral hygiene is one of the most important ways to care for your braces and teeth. We highly recommend that you brush after every meal and floss each day. Electronic toothbrushes are ideal for cleaning between the wires, brackets, and teeth; water flossers are excellent for removing food particles, as they can remove food particles from areas where traditional floss cannot reach, but is not a substitute to flossing.
