10 Things to Know Before Getting Braces

Braces in Virginia Beach, VAGetting braces is no small deal, no matter your age. It’s important to do some research, so you can get an idea of what to expect when visiting an orthodontist.

To help you prepare for your visit, we’ve put together a list of of things to know before you get braces. We’re always happy to help you learn more, at every stage of the way!

Thinking Ahead

1.    Earlier is Better
As with all medicine, it’s vital to detect and act on orthodontic issues as soon as possible. The teeth and jaw affect the entire head and body. As soon as you suspect issues, contact us for an appointment – and remember, all children should have an orthodontic evaluation at around seven years old, so they can receive early intervention and treatment if needed.

2.    Orthodontists Have Your Back
Not only do orthodontists have more training than dentists, but their training is also much more specialized. Take confidence in your orthodontist’s knowledge, and don’t be afraid to ask them to explain things to you.

3.    Be Mindful About Meds
If you’re concerned about taking pain medications ahead of an examination or procedure, talk to your orthodontist first, and be sure they know about any routine medications you take. If you’re not sure, err on the side of not altering your routine at all, and inform them of anything you take when you go in for your visit.

How Things Work

4.    Complete Information Is Always Top Priority
Before you get definitive answers about your treatment options, your orthodontist and their staff will be sure to get a clear picture of what’s going on – literally! With x-rays, molds, and direct examination, a number of means will be used to thoroughly evaluate your case.

5.    You’re Unique, and So Is Your Treatment
This is the main reason why nobody can tell you about your orthodontic needs better than your orthodontist. Not everyone’s case will be best treated by the same technologies, but no matter what your needs are, our orthodontists will ensure you get the best treatment available.

6.    Take A Breath – Possibilities Are Pretty Vast
It’s also difficult to say how much your treatment will cost or exactly how long treatment will take until your orthodontist gets to examine you. There’s no way around it, but the sooner you get in for your exam, the sooner you’ll have a much clearer picture of what’s next!

Breezing Through Treatment

7.    Considerations for Comfort
Stock up on soft foods before you get your braces! Mashed potatoes, ice cream, and jell-o are great.  We will provide you with a list of foods to avoid during your orthodontic treatment. Except for really sticky foods, you should be able to enjoy a normal diet.

8.    Yes, You’ll Have To Brush and Floss More
There’s no way around it; maintaining braces involves some serious cleaning. Ask your orthodontist about special ways to floss, and it won’t be long before you get the habits down.  Visit our website for video instructions on how to properly clean your braces

9.    From Beginning to End, Communication is Key
Do you wonder if you’re having an allergic reaction to a metal in your braces? Do you have questions about your progress or post treatment care? Always feel free to consult our office to discuss any concerns regarding your treatment.

And above all …
10.    It’s Totally Worth It!
A healthy smile leads to increased frequency of smiling, lower likelihood of headaches, improved self-esteem, and much better overall oral health. Progress comes gradually and in small spurts, but before you know it, you’ll be glad you made the leap.
