When your kids get home from school, they’re likely ravenous. If they have braces, their food choices are somewhat limited as they can’t have anything chewy or too hard. Here are three braces-friendly snack recipes to serve them when they walk in the door from school:
Banana Smoothie
You will need:
4 ice cubes
1 ¼ cup low-fat chocolate milk
1 banana, peeled and cut into chunks
1 tsp wheat germ
What to do:
Combine ice cubes, chocolate milk, banana chunks and wheat germ in blender and mix on medium for about 20 seconds. Pour into glass and enjoy. Makes an eight-ounce serving.
Potato Pancakes
Your kid may be craving crunchy potato chips, which he can’t have. But try these healthy potato pancakes with some applesauce for a soft treat with a twist.
You will need:
1 egg
½ tsp salt
½ diced onion
1½ tbsp. flour
1/8 tsp baking powder
1/8 cup milk
1½ cups cubed raw potatoes
Non-stick vegetable spray
What to do:
Put all the ingredients into blender, and blend until smooth. Spray the frying pan and put it on medium heat. Pour dollops of pancake batter into the frying pan, cooking on each side until golden brown. Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste. Serve with applesauce.
Strawberry Freeze

½ cup plain yogurt
2 tbsp non-fat dry milk powder
½ cup orange juice
1 ¼ cups strawberries
½ medium banana cut into chunks
