6 Things Adults with Braces Hate to Hear

The number of adults wearing braces is on the rise. In fact, one in five adults now wears braces, according to MSN. Adults are the fastest growing segment in many orthodontic offices around the country. One dentist on WebMD said when he started out in the 90s, just one percent of his clientele was comprised of adults. Today, that number is more like 50 percent.

  1. “Watch what you eat.” As an adult, perhaps with kids who also have braces, you know what you can eat and what you shouldn’t. Popcorn, apples, hard candy, taffy, hard taco shells, gum, ice, hard rolls, corn on the cob: the list goes on and on. Giving up your favorite foods can be a major pain while wearing braces but it’s necessary to avoid damage.
  2. “Brush and floss throughout the day.” In order to prevent cavities and plaque buildup, it’s necessary to thoroughly clean around the braces after each meal. Any food stuck in there can lead to tooth decay. This can be an inconvenience, especially when you’re at work or shuttling the kids around all day. Bring a small pouch with your toothbrush, toothpaste and floss, and hit the restroom after meals and snacks to clean your teeth.
  3. “You have to spend more time flossing.” As a task that many adults neglect even without braces, flossing is more important than ever now. However, it comes with an added challenge because of all that metal. Special tools are needed to thread the floss through each individual tooth and brace, significantly adding on to your oral health care regimen. Neglect this task, though, and you could be missing bits of food that will stay stuck if you don’t get them out.
  4. “Come in for regular checkups.” Between work, school, kids, housework, and family time, you may balk at the suggestion you have to visit the orthodontist every four to six weeks for a checkup. Aren’t you busy enough? Making time for these visits is important to ensure your teeth are progressing along nicely. Most routine visits take just 15 minutes anyway.
  5. “Here’s your bill.” With many insurance companies covering only a portion of the total cost for braces, this can be a very expensive proposition for adults who also have mortgage, car loan and school tuition responsibilities as well. According to WebMD, most adults wear braces for 18 months up to three years, costing between $5,000 and $7,000. However, most orthodontist offices are happy to put you on a budgeted monthly plan if you need it.
  6. “You have to wear a retainer.” Congratulations – your braces are off! Now, here’s your retainer. Why, you ask? A retainer is a custom fit dental appliance that should be worn at night in order to maintain straight teeth. It may be inconvenient, especially as an adult who likely shares a bed with a significant other. However, you don’t want to undo all those months and years of braces!
