Braces: Myths & Facts

Braces in Virginia Beach, VAWhile a straighter, healthier smile is appealing to most people, the idea of wearing braces can cause anxiety and concern. There are so many outdated or just downright misleading myths about braces that some patients struggle to tell fact from fiction. Making the decision to get braces is a serious commitment, so it’s important to understand what you’re signing up for. If you are considering getting braces, here are some common myths dispelled:

Myth: Braces are Painful

Fact: Braces may be uncomfortable or sore at first, but after a few days your mouth will adjust to the sensation of wearing braces. Slight pain from braces can be soothed by taking a small dose of Ibuprofen or Tylenol. Salt water can also help to ease irritation. Most people find that a small amount of discomfort is tolerable in exchange for a straighter smile.

Myth: My Diet will be Limited

Fact: You should still be able to enjoy most of the food you’ve always loved while wearing braces. You should avoid foods that are hard, chewy, or sticky. If you are wearing traditional braces, these foods could cause damage to the wires or brackets. In general, these food restrictions are good for your overall health as well as your dental health. If you were eating a healthy diet before you got braces, then you won’t notice any major restrictions.

Myth: Braces Cause Bad Breath

Fact: Braces don’t cause bad breath. Bad breath is caused by an accumulation of bacteria in your mouth. As long as you brush your teeth properly, you shouldn’t have problems with bad breath. Make sure to check for food particles left on your braces to ensure bacteria doesn’t have a chance to grow. Brush immediately after meals if you want to ensure bad breath doesn’t become an issue.

Myth: I’m Too Old to Wear Braces

Fact: The truth is people of all ages are getting braces now. Whether you’re a teenager or middle-aged, there is no “right” age for braces, so there is no reason to feel shy about wanting braces at an older age. Adults often find that a straighter smile gives them the confidence they need to find romance or excel in their careers.

Myth: Braces take a Long Time to Work

Fact: The treatment time for braces will vary from person to person. The treatment typically ranges from 12-30 months. We live in an age of instant gratification, so it’s no surprise that some people are frustrated by the time it takes for braces to straighten their teeth. Most patients find that treatment time goes by quickly, and the time is well-worth the reward.

Only you can decide whether or not braces are right for your specific situation. It’s important to keep the actual facts in mind when weighing the pros and cons of getting braces. Braces have come a long way in the past few years, so many of the myths and stereotypes no longer apply. After considering the options most patients come to the conclusion that a little discomfort and time is worth it to achieve that perfect smile.
