How to Prepare for Braces

Getting braces can make you feel excited and anxious. You look forward to your new smile, but you also want to feel prepared for the treatment. Knowing what to expect and how to prepare for braces gives you the confidence you need to enjoy the treatment process. Here are some common questions that our patients have before they get braces.

Do Orthodontists Clean Your Teeth Before Braces?

We recommend that you schedule a cleaning with your general dentist about one month before you get braces. Be sure to brush and floss at least twice per day after you have the cleaning. An orthodontist does not perform cleanings like your dental hygienist. The orthodontist may polish your teeth prior to applying braces to your teeth. This helps the dental adhesive hold the braces in place.

What Does the Orthodontist Do at the Initial Exam?

Dr. Savage, Dr. Sabol, and Dr. Visser love spending time with new patients. During the initial exam, they will take and review photos and x-rays of your teeth, and perform a thorough dental exam. The initial exam also includes time to discuss your concerns and treatment options and what to expect.

What Does the Orthodontist Do Before Applying Braces?

You may need some treatment to prepare your teeth for braces. If your teeth are crowded, you may need extractions. Spacers are often used before getting braces. These are small rubber bands that fit between your teeth, and they are typically used for the back molars. You wear the spacers for about one week. Spacers slightly shift your teeth so the orthodontist can fii the bands of the braces over your teeth. On the day of your appointment to get braces, the orthodontist preps the surface of your teeth, and the installation begins.

What Should I Do at Home to Prepare for Braces?

Brushing and flossing every day is very important before you get braces. You want to make sure that your teeth and gums are clean and free of bacteria and plaque. We recommend that you have some non-prescription pain medication on hand. There may be some mild to moderate discomfort when you first get braces. You may want to go through your fridge and pantry for any foods that you can’t have with braces. This eliminates any temptation. Lastly, start to look forward to your orthodontic treatment. This is a great way to take care of your smile.

How to Prepare Children for Braces

Younger children may feel uncertain about getting braces more than teens and adults. It is important to remain positive and optimistic. Make the experience as fun as possible. Be open and candid about what your child can expect. Go shopping for some fun favorite foods, such as ice cream, yogurt, soup, mashed potatoes, and pasta. Talk with the orthodontist about adding color to the braces, such as bands and elastics.
