Orthodontic Accessories: It’s Not Just About the Braces

From spacers and retainers to bite plates and palatal expanders, orthodontic accessories are necessary to augment the braces themselves. Some accessories come before the braces, such as spacers and palatal expanders, while others come after, such as retainers. Here’s what you need to know about orthodontic accessories:

Braces in Virginia Beach, VA

Spacers

Also known as orthodontic separators, these spacers are installed prior to braces. They’re small elastic rings placed between your teeth for a few days to a week before you get your braces put on. You need them in order to ensure a space between your back molars so braces can be installed comfortably. If you don’t get spacers, the installation process can be more difficult and painful.

Palatal Expanders

This device widens the upper jaw to ensure the bottom and upper teeth fit together nicely. Expanding the arch of the mouth can help prevent crowding and crossbites in children. This metal device is attached to the upper arch by bands around the teeth, requiring the user to turn a key within the top part every day that gradually widens that arch. It can cause some mild discomfort which usually subsides after a few minutes. This is a necessary accessory prior to getting braces.

Bite Plate

This small plastic appliance attaches to the inside of the top teeth, generally needed at the start of treatment to correct a deep bite – this is where the upper teeth excessively overlap the bottom teeth. This makes speaking, swallowing and chewing food rather difficult at first, but most patients adapt to it very quickly. It’s usually necessary to wear it for 24 hours. Remove it only for cleaning once per day.

Head Gear

Sometimes braces aren’t enough to move teeth into the desired position. In certain cases, growth modification is needed, and this is where the head gear comes in. It’s generally required to wear this for about 12 hours a day, which is primarily at night after dinner and sleeping. It is only worn in the privacy of your home.

Retainers

These plastic devices are molded to your mouth after your braces have come off. It’s important to wear your retainer as directed, usually at night, to keep your teeth from shifting and ruining two years of orthodontic  work.  They are custom-made, removable appliance that you must take care of by washing it and keeping it in its case when not in use.
