Visiting the Dentist with Braces

If you’re just getting started with braces, you might be curious about what to expect from your first visit to the dentist. Contrary to what some might believe, dental visits are still an essential part of your braces experience. Here’s everything you need to know about visiting the dentist with braces!

Do people with braces still go to the dentist?

Yes! With or without braces, going to the dentist is essential for maintaining your dental health. They are still the primary source for dental hygiene and care. Your orthodontist will be focused on your orthodontic treatment, which includes monitoring your progress with braces and ensuring your teeth continue to move towards proper alignment. You will still need to visit the dentist to keep the teeth clean and healthy, which can include monitoring the teeth for cavities and keeping the mouth free from plaque.

How often should you go to the dentist with braces?

During your braces treatment, you should continue going to the dentist just as often as you normally would. Typically, it’s recommended to visit the dentist biannually, or every 6 months. Some patients may even choose to visit the dentist more often than this, as braces are more likely to trap food in the mouth and lead to the buildup of plaque.

Does teeth cleaning hurt with braces?

Teeth cleaning should not be more painful with braces, but there are some exceptions. First of all, teeth cleaning may take a little longer with braces because your dentist or dental hygienist will need to be more meticulous when cleaning your mouth. It will simply take more time to work around all of the brackets and appliances on your braces, which can be uncomfortable for patients who dislike teeth cleanings. Another cause of discomfort can be soreness in the teeth. Soreness often occurs immediately after getting the braces put on, and immediately after subsequent tightenings. While this soreness only lasts a few days, teeth cleaning may be more painful than usual if you have the appointment while your teeth are still sore.

How does a dentist clean your teeth when you have braces?

The teeth cleaning process performed by your dentist while you have braces will be largely similar to the normal cleaning process. Your dentist will clean between your teeth, brackets and wires to remove plaque and bacteria. They will also floss between the braces. In some cases, special flossing or brushing tools will be used to carefully clean around the braces in areas that may be difficult to reach.
