Invisalign | How to Eat With Invisalign

Unlike traditional braces and other appliances, Invisalign makes it incredibly easy to continue eating the foods you love throughout your orthodontic treatment. Still, patients often have questions regarding exactly how they’re supposed to eat with Invisalign. Below, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about keeping your aligners safe during your treatment, all while eating your favorite foods.

What Can I Eat with Invisalign?

One of the greatest benefits of Invisalign is that you can eat whatever you want during your treatment. This is why many people choose Invisalign over braces, which have significant limitations on the types of food you can eat. There’s a big caveat here though: you must remove your Invisalign aligners before eating! Your aligners are quite fragile, which means that you should never eat with them still in your mouth. If you do, you risk damaging your aligners and prolonging your treatment.

What Can I Drink with Invisalign?

Just like eating with Invisalign, you can also drink whatever you’d like during your treatment. Again, this comes with the rule that you must remove your aligners before drinking your favorite beverage. Otherwise, you risk warping or staining the aligners, or trapping sugary and acidic drinks in the aligners that could damage your teeth. The only exception to this rule is water. You can safely drink water while wearing your Invisalign aligners!

Helpful Tip: Do This After Eating or Drinking!

Whatever your eating or drinking habits are like, it’s a good idea to brush your teeth before putting your aligners back on. This can help eliminate food residue, sugars, bacteria and more before they’re trapped underneath your aligners. Many patients choose to carry around a travel toothbrush kit for this very reason. If you don’t have access to a toothbrush, you can simply rinse your mouth with water. While this isn’t quite as effective, it will still help keep both your teeth and aligners clean and safe.
