Choosing a Band Color for Braces

One of the most exciting components of a braces treatment is selecting a band color. These bands are used to attach the wire, or archwire, to the brackets on each of your teeth. Drs. Savage, Sabol and Visser offer an array of colors to give patients a touch of personalization with their braces treatment. Below, we’ll discuss how you can go about choosing a band color for braces!

What color bands should you not get for braces?

While it may be tempting to simply select your favorite color for your braces bands, there are a few colors that you may want to avoid. Specifically, you may want to avoid colors like black, brown, yellow and white. Darker colors can make it look like your teeth are discolored, drawing attention away from your healthy teeth. Conversely, white and clear bands can be easily stained by food and beverages. Eventually, these colors could also make it look like your teeth are discolored.

Are dark or light colors better for braces?

As long as you don’t choose extremely dark colors like black or brown, dark colors have the benefit of making your teeth appear brighter and whiter. This is because the darker colors will contrast nicely with the teeth. Conversely, light colors, specifically white and yellow, could contrast with your teeth in an undesirable way – making them look yellower or more stained than they actually are. As it turns out, the best color bands for braces is something in the middle – not too dark and not too light!

What is a good first color for braces?

For most patients, a good first color is something fun and colorful that they’ll be excited about. As long as you avoid the dark, plain or light colors mentioned above, you really can’t go wrong. Some patients choose colors that match their eyes, such as greens and blues. However, reds, pinks and purples can all be great options too, as they each contrast with the teeth to make them look whiter.

Can I change the band color of my braces?

Yes! When you come in for adjustments to your braces, the bands are often replaced when the archwire is swapped out. This means you can select a new band color for your braces quite frequently. This means you shouldn’t stress too much about picking the perfect band color for your braces. Pick a color you’re excited about and see how you like it! There will be plenty of opportunities to try other colors and identify your perfect band color throughout your braces treatment.
